ADOPT A PET GUIDELINES

Where do I find a cat to adopt?

If you are considering adopting a pet, there are several options. You can look through the the newspaper classifieds, ask friends and co workers if they know of any pets up for adoption or you can contact you local shelter. You can also purchase a pet from a cattery if you want a pure breed.

When adopting from a shelter remember that most pets will have all current vaccinations and may already be altered. Many shelters also offer low cost veterinarian care for the first few monthes after adoption. However, animals from a shelter may have a higher rate of disease and may take more time to adjust to their new home due to abuse or neglect suffered previously.

When adopting from a personal classified ad, be wary of unscruplous breeders. Poor run catteries can lead to ill kittens and inhumane conditions that can leave a kitten permanently damaged.

Before purchasing a kitten from a breeder be sure to check out the breeder's credentials with the local Better Business Bureau and if possible the local veterinarian and humane society.
